When you think of Hawaii, what do you think of? Maybe it's the lush tropical foliage, or the amazing fresh air. Maybe it's the native music, or the spectacular volcanic vistas. And, of course, just about everyone thinks of Hawaii's pristine beaches and uninterrupted ocean views.
A day at the beach is practically a requirement when you're visiting Hawaii, and for good reason. If you plan ahead and bring a few essentials, you can have a grand adventure on Hawaii's beaches.
Swimsuit and Towel
A swimsuit is, of course, the bare minimum a person needs to enjoy the beach. There are plenty of changing facilities all over Maui's beaches, so don't feel like you need to get into your swimsuit at your hotel. We also suggest bringing a large water-resistant bag to hold your street clothes in while you're not wearing them.
And don't forget your towel! If your room accommodations doesn't have one available for you to take to the beach, consider buying one from a local grocery store. You can enjoy it while you're there and then leave it behind if you're short on space in your luggage.
Sun Protection
Overheating is the biggest foe to any beach excursion, so be sure you bring plenty of protection against the sun. We highly recommend:
- High-SPF sunblock
- Sunglasses
- Zinc oxide cream
- A long-sleeved light-colored shirt
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Beach umbrella or other portable shade
Heat exhaustion can easily creep up on a beach-goer, even if they aren't engaging in exercise. Be aware of how much sun you're getting and make sure to cover up at the first signs of sunburn. Drinking plenty of water is also important as dehydration is a common problem. Also, while in Maui, make sure to pick up Maui Babe browning lotion. Apply it after putting on sunscreen and enjoy the glow!
Beach Gear
While there's plenty to do on a beach that doesn't require any additional gear, like building sandcastles or hunting for shells, a few additional toys or equipment can make your visit so much more fun. These include:
- Buckets and shovels
- Snorkel and mask
- Swimming fins
- Boogie boards
- Beach chairs
Many of these items are available to rent from beach-side shops as well.
Sanitary Items
Most of Hawaii's beaches include shower facilities for guests, but you'll likely want to bring along additional items for your comfort. A handful of travel-sized items like hand sanitizer, shampoo, body wash, and wet-wipes help ensure you can clean up quickly once you're ready to head to dinner.
You might want to also include a few basic first aid items, especially adhesive bandages, in case any minor accidents occur on the beach.
